FOREFOOT SURGERY RECOVERY

For patients having forefoot surgery (eg bunion, great toe, lesser toes, mortons): Patients usually walk full weight bearing immediately after surgery. I routinely perform forefoot surgery under a combined local anaesthetic ankle block and general anaesthetic.   This enables the patient to walk immediately after the operation   The first two weeks are spent with the foot elevated for most of the time to decrease swelling.   Once pain and swelling subside walking is easier.   Bandages are removed at first post operative appointment (approximately 2 weeks post surgery). Sutures are dissolving and will be gone 3 -4 weeks  after the operation.   The patient is restricted to postoperative sandals for two to six weeks (dependant on the particular surgery) then capacious solid soled shoes for a further four to six weeks by which time the foot is greatly improved. Postoperative ache, stiffness and swelling typically take six to twelve months to entirely subside and shoe wear will change during this period. Foot and Ankle Surgery can be painful. Regular analgesia, rest and elevation in the initial post operative period is strongly recommended to assist in your recovery. Recovery varies between patients and can take up to one year After the immediate postoperative phase walking becomes progressively easier.   Recovery varies according to the extent of the procedure and from person to person.

HINDFOOT SURGERY RECOVERY

For patients having hind or midfoot surgery (eg midfoot surgery, ankle arthroscopy, reconstruction, tendo achilles repair, ankle fusion, trauma) For patients who are non weight bearing in the post operative period , you will be placed in a post operative cast for 2 weeks. Depending on your surgery you will require a cast for a period of two to six weeks. You will need crutches, a frame or wheelchair whilst in a cast. Once the cast is removed you will be fitted for a Camboot or ankle brace Postoperative ache, stiffness and swelling typically take six to twelve months to entirely subside and shoe wear will change during this period.
